Pearls are officially considered as the world’s oldest gem and have been admired, since centuries. Natural pearls were so rare and costly, until the invention of cultured pearls in the early 1900s, that they were exclusively reserved for the noble and the affluent. In fact, Julius Caeser once passed a law stating that only royalty could wear pearl jewellery. Below are some of the
famous pearls throughout history, which played many significant roles:
The hope pearl is undoubtedly one of the most
famous pearls in the world. It is thought to be the most exquisite saltwater pearl to have ever been discovered. The 1800-grain pearl has a drop shape and is famous for its unique colour gradation. Currently, the pearl is at the British Museum of Natural History and can be admired by anyone, who wishes to visit there.
This was a 44-grain natural, freshwater pearl that was discovered in Scotland in 1967. It was named after its discoverer- a pearl diver named Bill Abernathy. Abernathy didn’t keep this gem to himself and instead chose to display it at a jewellery store in Cairncross, for almost 30 years.
This pearl is unique, since it was not discovered inside an oyster, rather it was found in the Gulf of Panama. It’s perfect size and lustre gave it a place among the famous Spanish Crown Jewels. Unfortunately, the pearl was destroyed when the Spanish Palace was burned in the 18
th century.
One of the most
famous pearls in history was the ‘Pearl of Lao-Tse’ or the ‘Pearl of Allah’. It was recorded as the largest pearl and was discovered from a huge clam in the Philippines, in 1994. It weighs 14 pounds and is more than 9 inches long.
This pearl has intrigued historians since a long time and is considered one of the oldest pearls to be discovered. It was discovered at a Neolithic region of Arabia and is believed to be more than 5,500 years old. Pearls are one of the most versatile gemstones available, which have been used since centuries.
